ESITU
CHAPTER ONE
ESITU was formed in 2002 with the sole purpose to make moving, thought-provoking music which begs you to let go of the world around you and simply exist in the moment. Using the self-proclaimed Passive Aggressive Progressive Rock genre, ESITU quickly became a musical force in the Seattle music community, bursting onto the scene from out of nowhere.
In 2002 they released their first self-titled EP to a debut show of nearly 200 people. In 2004 the release of their heavily anticipated full-length album "Psychometry" to a mass of 1000 people ensured ESITU were making their mark on the scene. By 2006 they were well underway in the writing process for the next album and released yet another EP titled "The Last Three" to a nearly sold-out crowd at Seattle's iconic Showbox Market. Within months of that release, "ESITU: Live at Studio Seven" which documented a sold-out show and debuted four additional new songs hit the merch booth. An ambitious undertaking for any self-funded band, "Live at Studio Seven" enlisted the engineering skills of Kelly Gray (Candlebox/Queensryche) and was a DVD/CD double disc set. It was received by fans as an amazing experience of ESITU's music, methods and personalities; further solidifying how and why ESITU stood apart from most bands.
Though ESITU played countless shows in their home state of Washington, and toured through Oregon, California and Arizona - they never quit writing music, and by 2010 had recorded over 120 minutes worth of new material. 2010 saw the release of "Shadowlight", the first of what would become a two-album concept release. And if "Shadowlight" was the album that rocked, then 2012's "Halogen Dreams" would be the album that brought ESITU to the pinnacle and full realization of what they set out to do a decade prior. Over 60 minutes of their most well received, dreamy, and heavily landscaped music.
But alas - all things come to a natural conclusion, and on Jun 21, 2014 (the twelve-year anniversary of their first show) ESITU said farewell with their final performance - a two-and-a-half-hour homage of gratitude to a sold-out crowd of fans, friends and family.
CHAPTER TWO
As a local, self-funded, self-promoted band - ESITU accomplished more in their 12 years than many bands will ever get to experience. Sold out shows, touring, radio airplay, multiple albums, shows with nationally touring bands such as 10 Years, Taproot, Vast and more - ESITU came as close as you can imagine to "making it". But the music industry is challenging, and life evolves. As constantly growing individuals, you want to move forward - and sometimes that means exploring other options. While ESITU had determined that they were no longer going to pursue a career in the music industry, it didn't mean they had to cease all existence and acknowledgment of their past accomplishments. So on August 20, 2016 ESITU came back together for a short-lived reunion to play a 30-minute set at Seattle's iconic Hempfest. If there was a bucket list of things to do, playing Hempfest was the one last thing the band needed to knock out.
ESITU was more than just another band. They were the creators of music which blossomed a community of people who truly found themselves touched by the music, live performances and creativity of the band. From within that community formed marriages, families, children and countless friendships. In time, and from the ashes of ESITU rose even more music and more community in the form of new musical projects. Devils Hunt Me Down, No Such Season, Chaos & Romance, Naim and RC Cards On Mars are all musical projects that that took root in the wake of ESITU. It was an epic journey to be on - but the journey really never ended.
CHAPTER THREE
What many don't know is after ESITU's final show, the boys hit the studio and recorded a final album of songs. It contains five new songs, the reimagining of four older songs, and a single cover song. In 2023 the next chapter in the story of ESITU will see the light of day. An homage to the continued existence of the music, and a renewed online and social media presence with the release of these all but forgotten recordings.
Also found in the archives, 14 nearly completed songs that never quite saw the light of day. Plus, a reinvigorated intention to complete some long-lost work. While it can't be said what this next chapter will look like in terms of shows or tours, the legacy of music that was created will live on. Vanishing into the darkness of forgotten history is no longer an option.
